Known primarily for its use in many Asian dishes imparting a mustard-like earthy flavour, turmeric has also been used in traditional medicine for centuries to treat indigestion, throat infections, common colds, liver ailments and even used topically to cleanse wounds or treat skin conditions.
Now modern science is increasingly showing that a polyphenol called curcumin (diferuloylmethane), turmeric’s active constituent, is a powerful antioxidant that has the ability to help the body fight free radicals, which hinders tissue degeneration and inhibits pro-inflammatory molecules. Extensive clinical trials have addressed the pharmacokinetics, safety, and efficacy of this nutraceutical against numerous diseases in humans. Some promising effects have been observed in patients with various pro-inflammatory diseases including cancer, cardiovascular disease, arthritis, uveitis, ulcerative proctitis, Crohn’s disease, ulcerative colitis, irritable bowel disease, peptic ulcer, gastric ulcer, gastric inflammation, vitiligo, psoriasis, atherosclerosis, diabetes, diabetic nephropathy, diabetic microangiopathy, lupus and renal conditions.
So Why Black Pepper?
On its own the beneficial elements of turmeric are not easily absorbed. About 5% of black pepper by weight is comprised of a compound called piperine. One of the ways our liver processes turmeric is by making it water soluble so it can be more easily excreted. Piperine molecules inhibits that process and consequently curcumin’s bioavailability shoots up a massive 2000%. Even just a little pinch of pepper, 1/20th of a teaspoon, can significantly boost levels of curcumin in the blood.
Why Turmeric for women?
Turmeric is a Fertility Powerhouse. This potent antioxidant protects the liver, may even regenerate liver cells and in part stimulates the enzymes within the body that are responsible for flushing toxins from the body. This is important because as the master detoxifier, liver health is critical for hormonal balance. Consequently, research shows that turmeric may be helpful for those dealing with fertility health conditions like:
Menopause is marked by hormonal changes, hot flashes, depression, weight gain, impairment of bone health. Turmeric is a proven natural phytoestrogen which may help ease hormonal imbalances and therefore hot flushes, sleeping disorders, vaginal dryness, joint pain, mood swings, reduced bone density, cardiovascular disease etc.
Turmeric reduces progression of arthritis and osteoporosis. Osteoporosis or weakened bone strength is very common in women due to age related hormonal change. Curcumin is found to increase bone mineral density and protect bones from mineral loss. Similarly Rheumatoid arthritis is an autoimmune disorder that affects the joints and leads to pain and swelling in the joints. Chandran et al. reported that turmeric supplements were more effective in reducing tenderness and joint pain in patients suffering from rheumatoid arthritis than diclofenac sodium, a medicine prescribed in conventional arthritis treatment.
A clinical trial reported that curcumin supplementation prior to menstrual cycles for three months brought about a significant decrease in pre-menstrual syndrome score because curcumin’s anti-inflammatory properties regulated brain chemicals and therefore menses. Turmeric enhances the body’s ability to suppress inflammation by depleting the neurotransmitter responsible for pain, technically named neuropeptide substance.
Vaginitis is an inflammatory and infective condition. Research shows that curcumin can inhibit the growth of bacterial and yeast infection that cause vaginitis. It is also a potent anti-Candida agent and has strong anti-inflammatory property.
Turmeric is a powerful anti-cancer agent and in fact it manipulates over 20 biomolecular targets to cause cell death in cancer cells making it a power adjunct to cancer treatment. Curcumin is found exert anti-tumor and anti-cancer effects in breast cancer. It has been shown to causes cell death in ovarian cancer cells and inhibits the growth of ovarian cancer cells. It also sensitises ovarian cancer cells to chemotherapy and radiation therapy. Curcumin exerts anti-tumor effects in cervical cancer and can also reverse drug resistance in cervical cancer.
